Description: This trip is for 4 nights: Leaving Thursday, returning Monday. It's quite a long drive. If you're interested in staying fewer nights, ask the hotel and please let me know.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park: History: In the early 1900s, loggers came to what is now Humboldt Redwoods State Park to cut down lofty ancient redwoods for grape stakes and shingles. The founders of Save the Redwoods League thought that was akin to “chopping up a grandfather clock for kindling.” From the acquisition of a single grove in 1921, the League has raised millions of dollars to build and expand this park. Today Humboldt Redwoods spans 53,000 acres, an area almost twice the size of San Francisco. About one third, or 17,000 acres, of the park is old-growth redwood forest—the largest expanse of ancient redwoods left on the planet.
There are several miles of trails and options for longer or shorter hikes.
Dogs are not allowed in State Parks.
Besides our hikes within Humboldt Redwoods we'll definitely be visiting Prairie Creek Redwoods. Other options include the Headwaters Forest Reserve which requires reservations. You may remember the battle in the 1990s to preserve this land from being "harvested", and possibly the King Range portion of the Lost Coast on one of the days as well. If you'd like there's a Lost Coast Scenic Drive. Our plans are not set in stone this early on.
We'll be staying at the Redwood Riverwalk in Fortuna, CA. To make a reservation tell them you’re with the San Francisco Hiking Club for a steep discount.
The rooms are a total of $493.80 (including tax) for 4 nights for either the single or double room.
There is no charge to cancel your reservation up to 24 hours before the check-in date.
I believe the same nightly rate applies for fewer nights.
I forgot to ask about whether dogs are allowed.
Breakfast of sorts is included.
Each room has an iron and an ironing board! And a fridge & microwave.
TO BOOK A ROOM, CALL 707-725-5500 and be sure to mention the San Francisco Hiking Club group reservation block.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO GO, PLEASE REGISTER ON OUR SITE FIRST, THEN CALL TO RESERVE YOUR ROOM. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ONCE YOU'VE RESERVED YOUR ROOM!
