Description: We start our hike from the Shell Beach cove near the mouth of the Russian River. We ascend the Pomo Canyon Trail through the lush redwood forest flanking the south banks of the Russian River, of which we'll have at least a few panoramic views. After lunch at the Pomo Campground, we'll return to Shell Beach. Those still energetic will walk up the beach one mile to climb the "Little Ayers Rock" monolith, while the more meditative will relax and enjoy the jagged seascape at Shell Beach (especially spectacular during high/rough surf). Please note there will be some steep uphills on this hike. By carpool group consensus, some of you may make post-hike plans. Please arrange among yourselves accordingly. Please note that it's a long drive to the trailhead, so be cautious about evening plans. Sorry, no dogs allowed on this trail.
Bring / Wear: Bring water (minimum 1 liter), lunch, layers, sturdy shoes, hat and sunscreen. Weather along the coast is unpredictable. Check weather for Jenner, CA.
Weather Policy: Canceled in the event of heavy rain
Trailhead Meeting Place: We'll meet at the Kortum Trail Parking Lot, Shell Beach, Bodega Bay. It's about 7 miles north of Bodega Bay and 2 miles south of the junction of 116 and Highway 1 at Jenner. Google Shell Beach, CA 94923.
