HALLOWEEN IN THE MT. TAM WATERSHED

Leader: Gary Weiss

Leader Email: gary@sfhiking.com

Leader Phone: 415-279-5570

Meeting Date and Day: Saturday, October 31, 2020

Meeting Time: 10:00 AM

Departure Time: 10:15 AM

Meeting Place: We'll meet near the porta-potties at the Lake Lagunitas parking lot.  Exit 101 at the Sir Francis Drake/San Anselmo exit.  Stay on SF Drake until the town of Fairfax.  After passing the huge Good Earth store and a tiny gas station, turn left on Pacheco just before the Parkade parking lot.  Then take an immediate right onto Broadway in front of the theater.  Take the first left onto Bolinas-Fairfax Rd.  Go a little over a mile until you see the sign for Lake Lagunitas on the left.  Take that left and stop at the pay station - it's $8 for day use. Then continue all the way to the end on the paved road. G-Maps link:  https://goo.gl/maps/WzqHUL4Aib4XmMyQ7

(For those who would prefer to add a passenger in order to split the entry fee, you can meet at the Fairfax Parkade at 9:45. In case you haven’t been there the entrance to the Parkade parking lot is directly opposite this little gas station.  https://g.page/rino-service-station?share
The ramp is immediately before the corner.  Meet you at the far end near the exit.)

Rating:  Level 4

Mileage: 9 miles

Elevation Gain: 1600 ft

Description:  (IN THE EVENT OF SMOKE, HEAT OR RAIN THE ROUTE MAY CHANGE).
You do NOT need to come in costume!!
We'll begin by walking on the shady side of both Bon Tempe and Alpine Lakes.  We'll eventually head up the gorgeous Van Wyck creek, eventually crossing over to Swede George creek on some "unusual" trails.  We wander up, down and around those creeks and their various tributaries ending up back on Bon Tempe Lake.  None of the trails will be terribly difficult, but several will be on uneven terrain.

Marin County has relaxed its group-size restrictions.  But all of the usual directives, masks, distancing..... MUST be followed.  These initial hikes will be limited to 12 people (sorry!)
Below are the regulations:

  • We need to stay at least 6' apart at all times;
  • You need to keep whatever type of mask you prefer around your neck at all times to be prepared to put it in place at a moment's notice when encountering others.  Some prefer to wear a mask at all times - even better!  The easiest solution some of us have found is to wear a bandana around your neck, shifting it up over your nose and mouth when passing or speaking with others;
  • Ideally, unless you're members of one household, there should be one passenger in the back right seat only.  Drivers and passengers can decide what they feel comfortable with.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED A RIDE AND/OR CAN TAKE A PASSENGER, AND WHAT YOUR COMFORT LEVEL IS REGARDING PASSENGERS.

Bring/Wear:  Lots of water!!, sturdy hiking shoes, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and your MASK.

Rain Policy: Hike will take place but may be altered if either rain, smoke, heat or locusts threaten.

Driving Distance: 50 miles total there and back

Car Pool Fees Including Bridge Toll and Entrance Fee: $10
