WE'RE FINALLY DOING HIKES AGAIN!!  As we mentioned recently, San Mateo County has relaxed its group-size restrictions a bit.  But all of the usual directives, masks, distancing..... MUST be followed.  This hike will be limited to 12 people (sorry!)
Below are the regulations:

  • We need to stay at least 6' apart at all times;
  • You need to keep whatever type of mask you prefer around your neck at all times to be prepared to put it in place at a moment's notice when encountering others.  Some prefer to wear a mask at all times - even better!  The easiest solution some of us have found is to wear a bandana around your neck, shifting it up over your nose and mouth when passing or speaking with others;
  • Ideally, unless you're members of one household, there should be one passenger in the back right seat only.  Drivers and passengers can decide what they feel comfortable with.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED A RIDE AND/OR CAN TAKE A PASSENGER, AND WHAT YOUR COMFORT LEVEL IS.
  • This is a link to the full list of regulations issued by San Mateo County a few weeks ago.

Description:  Peters Creek Redwood Grove is the third largest old-growth stand in the Santa Cruz mountains.  The arduous out-and-back hike to this remote and primeval spot explains why it was never logged. The hike sets out on the steep and aptly named Summit Trail, joining up with Slate Creek Trail to Slate Creek Trail Camp before plunging into Peters Creek Canyon on Bear Creek Trail.  After a well deserved rest, lunch and exploration of he creek area, the climb back out begins.  This hike is more strenuous than the elevation gain suggests, with steep climbs at the beginning and the halfway mark. It is, however, well shaded by a canopy of redwood, tanoak, and Douglas fir.

Bring/Wear:  Lots of water (there is no place to refill), good hiking shoes, lunch, snacks and your MASK.

Rain Policy: Hike will take place rain or shine.

Driving Distance: 104 miles round trip

Total Bridge Tolls and Entry Fees: none

Car Pool Fees: $16

Alternative Meeting Place: Take 280 S to Page Mill Rd (Exit 20, in Los Altos Hills), then immediate right onto Page Mill Rd. Go west 8.6 miles, cross Skyline Blvd onto Alpine Rd. After 3.3 miles, veer left onto Portola State Park Rd and proceed approximately three miles to Visitors Center on right. Parking is  either at Tanoak Picnic Area or across the bridge past the Visitors Center and a right turn close to the Old Tree trailhead. Please note Page Mill and Alpine Roads are steep and winding; please respect bicyclists and share the road with them. G-Maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/DkpQ8KDwaEgPzMSZ7
