Description: WE'RE FINALLY DOING HIKES AGAIN!!  As we mentioned recently, San Mateo County has relaxed its group-size restrictions a bit.  But all of the usual directives, masks, distancing..... MUST be followed.  This first hike will be limited to 12 people (sorry!)
Below are the regulations:

  • We need to stay at least 6' apart at all times;
  • You need to keep whatever type of mask you prefer around your neck at all times to be prepared to put it in place at a moment's notice when encountering others.  Some prefer to wear a mask at all times - even better!  The easiest solution some of us have found is to wear a bandana around your neck, shifting it up over your nose and mouth when passing or speaking with others;
  • Ideally, unless you're members of one household, there should be one passenger in the back right seat only.  Drivers and passengers can decide what they feel comfortable with.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED A RIDE AND/OR CAN TAKE A PASSENGER, AND WHAT YOUR COMFORT LEVEL IS.
  • This is a link to the full list of regulations issued by San Mateo County a few weeks ago.

This hike will take place in both Pescadero Creek County and Portola Redwoods State Parks.  We'll be starting from the extremely remote Tarwater Trailhead Parking lot.  Despite the crowds in most parks we'll likely not see anyone until we're down in Portola Redwoods.
We descend gradually from oak and bay forest to dense redwoods as we approach Portola.  After walking along Peter's Creek for a ways we'll begin our even more gradual ascent.  As we approach the top we'll pass a beautiful but dilapidated vacant barn.  This is an especially beautiful route - and the narrow country road to the parking lot itself is an additional treat.

Bring/Wear:  Lots of water (there is no place to refill), good hiking shoes, lunch, snacks and your MASK.

Rain Policy: Hike will take place rain or shine.

Driving Distance: 68 miles total there and back

Total Bridge Tolls and Entry Fees: none

Car Pool Fees: $12

Meeting Place: Take 280 to the CA-84/Woodside Rd exit.  Stay on Woodside Rd all the way up to CA-35/Skyline Blvd. Take a left at the intersection and go 7.2 miles to Alpine Rd. Take a right on Alpine and go 3.9 miles to the VERY easily missable Camp Pomponio Rd.  (You'll have passed Portola State Park Rd along the way.)  Take a left on Camp Pomponio Rd to the end and park. Suggestion:  Download the maps link in case you lose the connection on the way down (happened to me).
