MT. TAM: RATTLESNAKE CREEK HUCKLEBERRY HIKE

Leader: Gary Weiss

Leader Phone: 415-279-5570

Meeting Date and Day: Saturday, Aug 03 2019

Meeting Time: 9:00 AM

Departure Time: 9:15 AM

Meeting Place: Under the Safeway sign on Market @ Dolores

Rating: Level-3

Mileage: 9 miles

Elevation Gain: 1500'

Description: Starting on Gravity Car Grade just past Mountain Home Inn, we'll take a short connector trail up to Hoo Koo E Koo Trail. From there we'll take Matt Davis Trail all the way to Bootjack Camp. Shortly afterward we'll drop all the way down to Muir Woods on the gorgeous, but very unofficial Rattlesnake Creek Trail. Then, depending on the crowds at Muir Woods, we'll take the Fern Creek Trail. For those who prefer to skip the crowds, you can shave about a mile off the route and meet us at Alice Eastwood Campground. On the way up from there we've feasted on huckleberries in the past. Early signs promise an overabundance this year. After climbing out of Muir Woods we'll take Troop 80 Trail back to the cars. With the exception of about a mile on Matt Davis Trail, we'll be in dense shade for the entire hike. There are a few steepish and narrow downhill sections of the Rattlesnake Creek Trail. Please be aware of that before planning to go. Otherwise, this is a really beautiful hike!

Bring/Wear: Sturdy hiking shoes!, lots of water (at least 2 liters), lunch, snacks and sunscreen.

Rain Policy: Contact hike leader if weather is questionable.

Driving Distance: 41 miles total, there and back

Total Bridge Tolls and Entry Fees: $7.00 bridge toll

Passenger Carpooling Fee:  $7

Alternative Meeting Place: We'll meet in the parking lot across from Mountain Home Inn (https://goo.gl/maps/636EpeBWoMzDFr6a9). There almost definitely will not be spaces available. If you continue straight (not turning left to continue on Panoramic Hwy) - past Mountain Home, a road heads uphill toward the Fire Station. In around 50', turn right onto a dirt road. Take the first spot you can find. If you're not using the above G-Maps link, take 101 to the Stinson Beach exit. At a large intersection (Tam Junction) there will be an ARCO station on your left. Turn left here to continue on Hwy 1. After a while there will be a fork in the road. To the left takes you down to Muir Beach and Hwy 1, to the right is Panoramic Hwy. Go right. Stay on Panoramic until you see Mountain Home Inn (the very last building) on your right and the full parking area on your left.
