EL CORTE DE MADERA CREEK OPEN SPACE PRESERVE SATURDAY HIKE

Leader: Gary Weiss

Leader Email: gary@sfhiking.com

Leader Phone: 415-279-5570

Meeting Date and Day: Saturday, July 06 2019

Meeting Time: 9:00 AM

Departure Time:9:15 AM

Meeting Place: Under the Safeway sign on Market @ Dolores

Rating: Level-3

Mileage: 10 miles

Elevation Gain: 1800'

Description: We'll start on the less traveled western side of the park. With the exception of one old growth redwood, most are second growth, having come back from those cut over the last century (hence the name of the park). We'll be in deep shade the majority of the time, but we'll poke our heads above the tree line from time to time to spectacular views of the Santa Cruz mountains. We'll stop over at the well-known Tafoni (Swiss Cheese) Rock outcropping. Lots of options to shorten or lengthen the hike - 10 miles takes us all around - with quite a few ups and downs. For info about the park: https://www.openspace.org/preserves/el-corte-de-madera-creek. If you'd like to see or print out a map: https://www.openspace.org/sites/default/files/map_ECDM.pdfhttps://www.openspace.org/sites/default/files/map_ECDM.pdf

Bring/Wear: Sturdy hiking shoes, layers, lunch, snacks and LOTS of water.

Rain Policy: Contact hike leader if weather is questionable

Driving Distance: 68.4 miles total, there and back.

Total Bridge Tolls and Entry Fees: Zero

Car Pool Fees: $9.00

Alternative Meeting Place: The trailhead we'll begin from is "CM-08" which is at the intersection of Star Hill Rd and Native Sons Rd. The easiest way to find it if you're coming from the north is to take Hwy 280 to Hwy 92 west towards Half Moon Bay. When you reach the very top of the hill turn left onto 35 South (careful of oncoming traffic!). Go for a bit over 7 miles to the intersection of Kings Mtn Rd on the left, and Tunitas Creek Rd on the right. Turn right onto Tunitas Creek Rd and go downhill for 1.3 miles at which point you bear left onto Star Hill Rd. Go for 2 miles to the first main right turn which is Native Sons Rd. Parking is on the left. Google maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/5RXctUm5g7i9dp8F9
