Description:  Come camp, hike, and explore volcanoes, boiling mud pits, fumaroles, and other geologic wonders of volcanism that shaped and continue to shape the geography of the park. Often snow lingers on some of the peaks year round. The park is sparsely visited with large areas of open wilderness. Be advised that the elevation throughout most of the park is 6,000-8,000 feet with scattered higher peaks. Numerous hiking options abound, including climbing Lassen Peak, over 10,400 feet, which last erupted in 1915. Troy’s favorite hike in the area is Brokeoff Mountain, which is slightly shorter than Lassen Peak and more pleasant to walk up. Less strenuous hikes include exploring areas of rugged volcanism to pristine alpine lakes, meadows, and streams. Due to the elevation and topography, many hikes offer excellent vistas. There are endless hiking possibilities for all level of hikers. Hiking options also include numerous short hikes to geologic wonders. We reserved a group campsite in the park at Lost Creek Campground for 3 nights from Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3. The campsite allows up to 25 people. The cost of the campground is $186 for 3 nights. The cost will be divided by the total number of campers. Please bring cash. If more than 25 people sign up, we will maintain a wait list in case of cancellations. The campground has drinking water, pit toilets, tables, and limited facilities, but is a short drive to a store, hot showers, and other facilities. Showers may require payment in quarters to activate. We saw bears at Lassen in the past. You must bring bear-resistant food containers or share the metal food lockers provided at the campsite. The group campsite has a 6-vehicle maximum. Carpooling is strongly encouraged, given the distance to travel and limited parking immediately adjacent to the group site. A list of participants will be shared with all those going to facilitate carpooling. Lassen Volcanic National Park is about 50 miles east of Redding, California. Park entry fee is $20 per vehicle. Participants are responsible to know and to follow applicable park rules and laws. For more information about Lassen, visit the park website at www.nps.gov/lavo. Please email Troy (troybuckmeier@mac.com) and Carl (carl@sfhiking.com) to sign up for this trip and if you have questions about this trip.
