Nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains between the tony town of Woodside and Phleger Estate, Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s southernmost park, Huddart is a primeval paradise. Amid the majestic groves of coastal redwoods and Douglas fir are forests of tanoak, madrone, California laurel, with sword fern and redwood sorrel sheltering its abundant banana slug population. Higher up are sunny chaparral areas and their native plants of manzanita, chamise, and chaparral pea. Keep an eye out for bobcats, coyotes, and gray foxes. The hike begins along swiftly flowing West Union Creek before climbing Crystal Springs Tr through lush McGarvey Gulch to Skyline Tr, then descends Chinquapin and Dean Trails to the trailhead.
